64 squares and more possibilities than there are atoms in the observable universe. That’s the magic — and the cruelty — of chess!
Between February and May 2026, chessboards livened up lunchtime breaks at Cicorel. Fifteen participants competed in a rapid chess tournament with a time control of 10 minutes plus 10 seconds per move, playing one game per week. It was a unique way to enjoy some friendly social time while giving their brains a workout.
The concept was simple: everyone played against everyone else. But behind this apparent simplicity lay a true strategic battle, combining concentration, time management, risk-taking… and sometimes a few fatal mistakes. Because in chess, even the slightest misstep can prove very costly. Yet nothing is ever over until checkmate or the flag falls.
After 14 rounds full of suspense, Pierre ultimately emerged as the winner with an impressive record of 12 wins, 1 draw, and just 1 loss. Alexey and Thomas rounded out the podium after a very solid tournament.
Special mention also goes to Michel, the only player to have managed to beat our future champion.
Beyond the results, this tournament was above all an opportunity to foster a great atmosphere and strengthen bonds among colleagues. From the intense joy of an unexpected victory to the frustration of giving up a piece too quickly, every game brought its own share of emotions.
One thing is certain: this first edition has us eager to do it again.
